How we can help

A hospital stay can be a spiritually difficult time. Being away from home, family and all that you hold dear, along with any worries about your health.

The chaplains reflect the care that is at the heart of our trust by giving spiritual, pastoral and religious support to all patients, relatives, carers and staff. It’s a service offered to everyone. 

Chaplains and volunteer ward visitors visit all the wards regularly throughout the week. They have time to listen and offer encouragement and support to patients and their relatives and carers during their stay in hospital.

Arranging a visit from the Chaplaincy Team

If you, or someone you know, would like a visit whilst in hospital please get in touch with the Chaplaincy office. Each chaplain is a leader in their own faith but they also work with people with any faith or no faith.

Chaplains are available all day, every day and can be contacted by a relative or carer, or ward staff by calling the hospital switchboard.

The chaplains can also contact other denominational ministers and leaders of other faiths.

Other religious support

Your own minister, priest or religious leader is always welcome to visit you in hospital.

Please speak to the ward staff or a chaplain if you would like them to arrange this for you.

If you are not from the area, the Chaplaincy Team has contacts with many faith communities and can call on the support you may need.

Our chapels and prayer rooms

The chapels at our hospitals are quiet and reflective spaces where all are welcome and can find sanctuary.

There is a designated prayer room next door to each chapel. These are open 24/7. The chapels can be found at:

• St Richard’s Hospital on the ground Floor of the main hospital near Ashling and Lavant wards.
• Worthing Hospital in the North Wing on the ground floor.
• Royal Sussex County Hospital in the Louisa Martindale Building, Level 6C Pink Zone.
• Princess Royal Hospital on the first floor of the main building.
• Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital Oasis on the first floor.

Muslim prayer rooms

There are Muslim prayer rooms at: 

• Princess Royal Hospital by the chapel.

• Royal Sussex County in the Louisa Martindale Building, Level 6C Pink Zone.

• Friday prayers for the Muslim community are held at 1pm on Fridays in the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital Oasis
