We give extra medical, surgical and nursing care to premature and sick newborn babies. We have special care, high dependency and intensive care neonatal units.
We also take part in many local and national research projects. These help us to drive improvements and make sure we are providing the best and most up-to-date care.
How we help
Our units have specialist facilities, equipment and skilled staff to give the best care to premature and sick newborn babies.
It can be a very anxious time for you when your baby is in the neonatal unit. We will support you during your baby’s stay with us and help to prepare you for taking them home. We will involve you in your baby’s daily care and feeding and help you to get to know each other.
We will also advise you how to access support at the end of your baby’s stay with us.
We have our own neonatal transport ambulance for babies who need a higher level of specialist care. They can be moved safely from the hospital they were born to other units in within Kent, Surrey, Sussex and beyond.

Royal Sussex County Hospital: Trevor Mann Baby Unit (TMBU)
Located on the 14th floor of the Thomas Kemp Tower Block, accessed from Eastern Road, Brighton, BN2 5BE. TMBU has three nurseries for special care, high dependency care and intensive care. The unit also cares for babies who need surgery.

Princess Royal Hospital: Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU)
SCBU is located on the 2nd floor, Princess Royal Hospital, Haywards Heath. It has two nurseries caring for premature and sick newborn babies who need short term high dependency care or special care. Babies who need intensive care may be transferred to Brighton or elsewhere.

The Special Baby Care Unit is located in the West Wing of the hospital.
Worthing Hospital: Beeding Ward
Beeding, our Special Care Baby Ward is located in the East Wing, 1st floor at Worthing Hospital.
Visitors
We do not consider parents as visitors. You are an integral part of your baby’s care with the neonatal team. You are welcome to be with your baby whenever you wish; day or night. If you’d like to bring visitors please check your unit’s individual visiting policy.

Our consultants are specialist doctors who manage the overall treatment of each baby. They are supported by a team of Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioners (ANNPs) and doctors. Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioners are nurses who have had specialist training in neonatology.
