Our clinics provide services in general nephrology, low clearance and renal vasculitis (an autoimmune disease that causes your white blood cells to attack the glomeruli, the tiny blood vessels that filter blood in your kidneys), as well as transplant and dialysis clinics.

Dialysis
Our main dialysis unit is based in the Sussex Kidney Centre at the Royal Sussex County Hospital. We also support satellite clinics in Bexhill, Crawley, Eastbourne and Worthing, home dialysis and holiday dialysis.

Brighton
The main unit in Brighton has 36 in-patient beds, and 41 haemodialysis stations. It provides outpatient haemodialysis for over 150 patients three times a week.

Home dialysis
We promote self care and have a growing number of patients that dialyse at home for their own convenience.
The Buckfield Home Dialysis Centre at the Sussex Kidney Unit is one of the leading units for local anaesthetic peritoneal dialysis (PD) insertions, with most of our catheters being inserted this way. PD offers a unique home therapy which allows patients to be in control of their own health, with our support.
Holiday dialysis
We offer holiday haemodialysis to other UK and overseas renal patients. Contact [email protected] for more information.
Outpatients
We offer an outpatient service to patients with kidney disease including transplantation and vasculitis (inflammation of the blood vessels). Our aim is to help to improve your quality of life and wellbeing, and to encourage independence, rehabilitation and self-care.
We have one large waiting area, ten consulting rooms and one three bay treatment room.
Inpatients
Our inpatient care is available at Royal Sussex County Hospital, Trafford Ward.
The ward is split into 4 bays and 2 side rooms. Each 6 bedded bay has a shower/toilet. Each bed has a Patientline TV and phone. There is a day room that has a TV, video and small selection of books and music.

Our renal counselling and therapy service are available for all patients and their families, at any stage of kidney disease and treatment. This is available for anyone who attends the Sussex Kidney Unit or its satellite clinics.

Our renal (kidney) dietitians are specially trained and experienced in giving help and advice to people with all types and stages of kidney disease.

For everyone accessing the Sussex Kidney Unit, we offer a welfare advice and support service.
Medication reviews
It is important that you become an expert in your medications, as this is an important part of you staying well.
There are pharmacists at the Sussex Kidney Unit who have specialist knowledge in treating people with kidney problems.
We encourage you to book in a medication review any time you feel it would help.
Medication reviews can help with the following:
- Having a better understanding of what you are on and why, and this can help you feel more in control of managing your condition
- Understanding the side effects of your medication
- What to do with different tablets on dialysis days
- Quantity and frequency of tablets may be improved to suit your needs and lifestyle

Patient support groups
South Eastern Kidney Patients Association (SEKPA) is a registered charity which helps kidney patients in Sussex. SEKPA are based at the Sussex Kidney Unit and raises money to support patients and to buy equipment.
Renal Patients User Group (RPUG) is an associated group of SEKPA, which provides communication between patients and staff. The group is patient led, and is supported by staff. Patients and carers are invited to become members of the group and attend bi-monthly meetings. SEKPA can be contacted on: 07401 493 373.
