Extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (ESWL) is the application of special sound waves (shockwaves) which are directed through the skin and on to urinary tract stones.

This information is for men who are troubled by lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). Lower urinary tract symptoms describe the problems that are related to the working of the bladder (which holds urine) and the urethra (the tube from the bladder to outside) through which urine passes when we urinate.

Men experience a variety of problems with their urinary system, leading to unwanted leakage of urine. Pelvic floor exercises have been shown to be effective following surgery on the prostate and when men experience a dribble after passing water.

This is a drainage tube which is directly placed into the kidney through the skin. This tube is placed if there is a blockage in the ureter (tube from the kidney to the bladder).

A percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is a procedure to remove a kidney stone or stones. Percutaneous means ‘through the skin’ and nephrolithotomy means ‘taking stones out of the kidney’.

This is an operation to create a larger channel through the prostate gland. This will prevent or relieve obstruction to the flow of urine.

The operation to remove the testis is known as an orchidectomy and is performed under a general anaesthetic.

This is a visual examination of the inside of the bladder. It is performed using either a general anaesthetic or a spinal anaesthetic.

Non invasive bladder cancer only affects the lining of the bladder, and the tumours can usually be removed easily using a resectoscope. This is called a TURBT (Transurethral Resection of the Bladder Tumour).
