Professor Malcom Reed joined the Trust Board in March 2023 and had previously advised the Board of Brighton and Sussex Hospitals Trust. Malcolm represents the Trust’s University partners from his position as Dean of Brighton and Sussex Medical School, a role he was appointed to in 2014.
Malcolm grew up in Birmingham and later studied medicine at the University of Sheffield in 1981 before undertaking surgical training in Birmingham, Derby and Bristol, later moving to the University of Louisville in the United States to undertake a research MD. Following higher surgical training in Sheffield, Malcolm became Foundation Chair in Surgical Oncology at the University of Sheffield in 2000 and subsequently Professor of Surgery and Head of the University Department of Oncology.
Alongside his role as Dean of Brighton and Sussex Medical School, Malcolm spends one day a week in clinical work with a speciality interest in breast cancer with involvement in a large number of multi-centre national trials investigating diagnosis and treatment.
Malcolm has had a focus over the last 15 years on developing teaching and assessment for medical school students and was Chair of the Medical Schools Council from 2019 to 2022
